Lantis Lims

[livejournal.com profile] cerri44 and I werev talking this weekend about [livejournal.com profile] lantis_lims and I told her how I'm frustrated that most my lantis lims icon follow the same pattern. Cropped characters and a background.

Mind you, I love the style and I adored every icon I posted, because I took a long time doing them and it's so much fun, but I am noticing a style-trend. They are very similar and very me.

And now I got this comment in my feedback there: At this point in voting, I have an idea whose icon this is based on style -- I've noticed because I adore the style. I'll be interested to find out if I'm right. Mind you, I like that my stuff if noticable, but I'm not sure it's always good and I know that I want to be more flexible in skill.

I mean, I didn't realize before putting those three entirs together just how similar they were.

Very cool Supernatural icon set here!!

I pretty much have the same problem. Lately I've been going for the same kind of style for most of my icons - different from this though. Part of me likes the fact that I've hit on something people like, however I feel restricted and a little like a one-trick pony. And of course, eventually, the gig is going to be up on that style - regardless of the anonymity people are going to know which icons are mine by that 'style'...

[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
For me...it's not so much what other people like, because first and foremost, I need to be happy with that I'm doing. If other people like it too...that's an added bonus.

I do think that the style you grow into depends a lot on what you look at daily.

And I think your style always changes depending on what your visual stimulus is. There really never is a standstill, even if it's just the quality that gets better.

Oh definitely. If I didn't like them, they wouldn't see the light of day. I particularly like black and white, so most of my icons tend to be based around that. Not to say I don't make colour ones, I just prefer B&W...

My style has changed a lot, but more in the 'My PSP skills have improved' way than anything else...

I think b/w icons are cool. I really like the merge you are using here.

and true... the increase of skill also is an important part of the work-impovements. I think for everyone.

I go through the same thing. Some nights I sit in front of photoshop and think, damn, is that the only thing I can do? Sometimes looking for inspiration sucks.

[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Heee... but it's never true.... you can do different things.

For me it's more like, I work on it and work on it and work on it. And in the end I see that it's a lot like the works before that.

Your icons are SO pretty, I dig that style. I have tried to make similiar icons of my own (hey, since I don't actually post icons I'm allowed to, right? :-p ) but I've absolutely failed to.

All I can do is play around with colours a little and add big text. I suck at icon-making :-p

I don't care so much if people copy a technique.. why should I. I can show you how... personally :) *giggles*

and I can send psds.

Thanks... I like it colorful!!!

i think it sucks when we do lots of icons that are fruit of someone's else created style.
is true that i sometimes i try to re-create those styles i like but always put something that make people know that those are my works and not someone else.
but hun, let me tell you that your work is fabulous and those icons are simply amazing. Is not fair for other ones to 'steal' our design/style, but what can we do? not to much i think.
your icons are just unic.trust me.
^^

But they always are!! you have to get inspire somewhere.

I think there ios nothing wrong with getting inspired and mimicking a bit,if you add your own flavour.

and thanks... it just struck me as odd that over a space of several weeks all my icons look so similar.

Yipes! I came over here to scrounge for tutorials and saw this post. Seeing as I'm the person who set off your freak out, I'd like to clarify my meaning.

I wasn't even thinking about your composition, honestly, when I wrote that. Looking at them all together, I see the similarity in composition but I don't think there has been a huge variety in caps for us to work with, honestly. Look at the submitted icons and I think you'll see a similar trend in "sameness." I think a lot of us are choosing between "truncated figure on a pretty background" and an unusually cropped close-up. I completely understand being concerned over being in a rut but I don't see that as problematic in your work. You're often combining caps to make a constructed reality, playing with text, or recombining the caps and textures to make a whole new composition. I find that's more creative than 95% of what the rest of us are doing. *shrug*

What I meant when I wrote that was, "I cannot stop marveling over your sense of color and how amazing it is to see the amount of detail you retain even in tiny, beautiful faces." I'm dismayed that my comment caused you to freak out! I meant it in a completely fan-girling, "your work is so superior it can't help but shine and proclaim it MUST be yours" kind of way.

[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't really your post, don't worry. Like I said..I noticed it before that and your comment made me very very happy.

And I know people recognize my style..it happened 3 years ago and it happens now. It just seems very evident to me, that especially looking at the last row, the style is very similar.. and I'm not talking about the sense of, this looks like and icon by this icon maker, but in a sense that the texturing and placement of the crop and the fact that the characters are cropped in the first place, is something I did for every single entry to this challenge round.

Mind you, you are totally correct about the SGA cap quality. That is the most furstrating thing, because the SGA caps for some reason, are a lot harder to work with than most other show caps.
I often see icons of other show sthat are just so gorgeous, but can hardly every be achieved for SGA.

And like I said.. it wasn't the comment at all, that was just a small thing and it's more a thing that for me as an artist I'm both excited and dismayed about the fact that people can recognize my work and the fact that sometimes, it feels that my evolving doesn't happen fast enough.

Thank you :)

You know what's your problem? The icons are not always the same or similar....they are always so good that they have to be yours!Trust me on this, you give them a special look, sometimes is the colouring, sometimes the use of textures, sometimes the composition!
I really hope you'll be one of the finalists! You deserve it!:)

[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
True... but the basic steps I took: cropping the characters, coloring, Composition and background, they are always similar and I just noticed that which made me wonder. Seemed kind of evident especially in the last three icons.

In any case, I'm getting my head out of my ass ;)
Thanks, hon :)

I love your style nonetheless, and wish I was that talented.

Your stuff is gorgeous, and even though they're similar (with the cropped people and different background) each of them is different with the colouring, text and composition. The way you make a new cool background for the subject, the icons turn into bits of art, they're so brilliant :)
