It Seems the Livejournal Cusomization section has been revamped. Looks a lot better. So I'm now gonna play with it a bit while I wait for a phone call. If you want to check it out, it's here.
lol... I think it depends on what kind oif livejournal user you are.
Because in theory, the s2 styles should be enough for people and everyone just changes the color and stuff. They don't always anticipate the needs well.
Really styling them is actually difficult in both systems. Even though the s1 overrides are simpler than the s2 extras.
I really like the new layout! Much, much better. Have you seen the soon-to-be profile page (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_design/5538.html?mode=reply)? Just add ?ver=ng at the end of your profile url and you can see it...
My layout was made for me and while I'd love to change the background pic, I would not know how to do that and keep everything else as is. (just the words, no blocks), so I don't mess with it, lol! My knowledge stops there BIG TIME! :D
Yeah, I can't explain it. Go take a look, if you have a minute...there are no boxes on my page, just the words against the background. I'd love to change my background pic but am afraid that it'll make the boxes come back. hmmmm... Thanks, babe!

And I was always under the impression people used s2 to make massive alterations to the look and css etc, while s1 was for minor hacks only. :P
