Why, oh why?

So there is this photographer called Tyler Shields who takes photographs of lots of celebrities and posts them in his blog and it seems everyone seems to want to work with him. And I have to say I don't get it. I do not think his work is beautiful, artistic has a good mood in any way.

Instead it's sexist and deals only with cliches and everyone always looks cheap. There are a few exceptions, but not too many.

Anyways, currently half the cast of one of my current guilty pleasure shows, revenge, has done a shot with him and of course it looks cheap and pretentious, which makes me sad. One of the pics I like though. It's the pillow fight with the silouettes. Also Gabrial Mann has a really nice chest ;)

Sex, violence, and gore... wtf?! And so much flash! I swear, some of the shots are so washed out I can barely make out any details.

Some of the photos on his site, I feel a bit sick after looking at them.

A lot of those photos have been done already - the group who lifts one member has been done over and over and is so unoriginal. *yawn*

I do like the pillow fight picture but the rest just don't do anything for me at all. I really don't get all these people acting like he's the Ansel Adams of celebrity photography. I could take better pictures in my sleep - and given the scheduling at conventions, probably have too.

It's not that I don't think he's got the skill. Technically he is very good and from time to time he's got really good shots!

But the subject matter is disgusting. Mostly people are sex objects, or beaten up. Women are always the victim and dudes the predators. Sort of. And often woman are also shown doing stuff like laundry. I'm in no shape a femisit, but it is just sadly obvious here and I don't get how actors can want to support such a view.

Heh heh. Yeah, con group shots are always cheesy and clichéd.

Technically, yes his photos are fine - his colour is balanced, his lighting is good, etc. But there is nothing about the pictures that really wows me, nothing that makes them special. And I don't just mean the composition or subject - I just looked at those pictures and found them very...flat. Even when I was looking through his portfolio, there were some really good ideas from a composition standpoint but they lacked that something I can't really explain that separates a technically good photograph from an amazing one.

And I agree with your assessment of the subject matter in much of his work; there seems to be a lot of misogynistic themes within his portfolio and while his photos lacked that something, they certainly managed to evoke anger. Usually, I'd offer that this might be the intent, to make people angry to lead them to action against such things in society, but nothing in his portfolio indicates he's that sophisticated - a lot of the images just come off as gross and it pains me to see some of the famous faces he has photographed and that yet more want to work with him, thus propping up such antiquated views of women.

You're right, there's nothing original. It seems like they always do the same pictures over and over again. Only the faces change.

Yeah.. and always the same themes. And I don't think most of them are estetically pleasing either.

Not familiar with that name, but maybe it is a name drop thing? They don't want pretty pictuers per se, but get the buzz in connection with the name?

And I have to agree. They don't look like anything really special. But like I said, maybe not what either of them was going for.

Adn it's possible he just wants to polerize people. Just not the impression that I got.

I am really not familiar with photographers, so me never having heard of him before doesn't mean he is not famous.

Maybe those kind of pictures help him make his name. He knows people will talk about them so he takes them again and again until people get bored of talking about them and then he starts something new?

I am sure he and the actors he takes pictures of do have some reason for doing it, though, else they wouldn't, right?

Yes exactly. I'm just very curious. Who knows..maybe he's just a really nice guy to hang out with....

I've never heard of him till now, so I went and have a look. I just got the impression that he was trying to make everything seem glamourous and overdone. I'm not by any means a great photographer or have an eye for anything so I can't tell if it's good or not.

I like Revenge though but I can't say if I'm a fan of the photoshoot. It looks very photoshopped to me actually...

I have no idea if the shoot is photoshopped. no way of knowing. It's possible. But I'm notsure he works like that.

Agreed. His work is so basic, boring and sexist. I'd expect better even from photos takes for school photography class. Do not get his appeal.

Sexist first and foremost. I just don't get why all those young actors want to make photoshoots with him all the time.

i just don't understand the artistic value of his work :S

There are some good shoots there, or rather some I think are tasteful. But most are just not my cup of tea at all.

I lot of people claim he copies Terry Richardson. Yeah... you know..I think they are right. They do seem to be a bit similar.
