Haven and the Bachelors of art
First of all [livejournal.com profile] prettybutt has rolled out the red carpet for me, which I find absolutely hilarious and awesome and very touching. She asked me to join the community [livejournal.com profile] thetroubles celebrating the SyFy show Haven in art and graphics form. I posted only two graphics so far, but people like [livejournal.com profile] tihana whose icons count amongst my favorites currently and a lot of other great artists.

Haven as a show, should you not watch it, is a mystery show with people with strange abilities and great quirky characters. And the way it's films and the landscape and such are really beautiful. It's not a must see I think but it is really enjoyable and heart-warming.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] half_lit_world and I went to the presentation of this years bachelor works at our old school. It was for the most part of waste of time. We were completely underdressed in our jeans and shirts and sneakers. I remember we were such a different crowd back when we got our diplomas. Far more down to earth. I think we all just fit together and when I look at all the classes since then, I think that was something special.

That said, of 48 students only 8 presented their work and even though it was well done stuff. It just not up to par with works in a diploma. It's like they thought, let's find projects that might be sold in the real life. So there was a corporate identity thing, some photogaphs about vanity and a lot of boring stuff. Everything was extremely generic. the photographs looked like the came right from the image database, seen before and so very boring and not even good and interesting photography. Nothing had soul, nothing was different. Seen a 100 times before and done better.

Isn't the diploma a time where you can do something insanely creative? Isn't that the work where one would go and say, I'm going to try out something really really cool? Isn't that the time to create something that will amaze people instead of just being a thing that people see and will say, that's not so bad.

Well, it did make me feel good about my own work, though. We decided we were artists much more then these people.

We left fairly early after that and went to a cafe and chatted for hours. We didn't even notice how late it was until I started yawning and we checked the time.

<3

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] _inbetween_, [livejournal.com profile] bingbulette and [livejournal.com profile] paperwirexit! I hope it is/was a good one.

From what you've described and what I've seen from you I'd have to agree-everything you do has soul, sad kids these days are afraid take chances with their work. <3

Of course... the plug was about time. But lazy elli is lazy ;)

And it's a shame right? This work.you don't get money for it ..and you have time! So why not do something other than the stuff you would do at the place you wok in later and show that you are creative. I#ts like they say..look at this dear medicore design agency, I can do what you need. So they are the same as 99% of all the other people.

you'd think so! i see the same boringness in my students. they are working on visual essays right now, and most of them go for the most straightforward photo opportunities. then they are suprised when i go DNW.

DNW??

And it's sad is it not? You use those works to apply for jobs. How will they distingish themselves and be different from the other people?

I don't get it.

I always feel like that most of the time when I see the work other people do for their diplomas. I just remember how crazy I went to figure out something creative to do. In the end I went with a new kind of book (PopupComic) which I promoted. I didn the book cover/back including two double pages + popups, a teaser + poster campagne, various adverts, postcards, two different websites (one teaser and one for the publisher) usw...
I even decorated the table I got for the diploma party *G* but in the end I got an A which I thought was well deserved lol

Yes... that does sound amazing. I think you went a lot father then I did. I did a 30 page book I think. And then some promotion stuff.

And had an A as well. Except that my oral presentation screwd up my grade a bit.

I'm so glad to see you posting at that community too. There are so many amazing artists in that comm and I'm glad I have it on my flist. Haven might not be a must watch show, but it for sure is one of my favorite shows, I love it so much!

I'm sorry to hear that going there was a waste of time. But at least it made you feel good about your own work so that's something at least. But yeah you would think that doing something like this; such a project would cause you to think outside the box, to be creative. But I can also understand why it feels better to some to go for safe.

That sounds lovely though, chatting until it gets late. So I hope you had fun with your friend all in all.

The com is great. I'm really innspired right now..just need to find the time. I really only did two picturs so far, which is kind of sad.

And that's realyl it about haven ;)

Yes, I can sort of understand this kind of reasoning as well. It just noadays seems so incredibly short-sighted.

I had a lot of fun with my friend, yes...
