Dollhouse up to 1x03
I've caught up on Dollhouse and so far I'm not qite sure that to make of it. The thing is, I enjoy watching it. I don't just it enjoy it for Tahmoh, but I do like watching it. There are certain things that intruige me, like what makes Echo special, what happened with Alpha and with the first Sierra. Who's actually the brains behind the organisation. How does it all work. Who and how do they send the clues to the FBI and who wants Echo dead.

Here's what I'm not so cool on. Did Caroline actually know what she signed up for? Or is she being continually victimized without her knowing. It doesn't really shed a good light on the company either way and is a form of rape of you ask me.

The second thing is this. Considering that Echo gets wiped all the time, she isn't really anyone. Who am I supposed to feel for or emphasize with if she's not? I hope she finds a bit of Caroline in herself at some point or that she adapts more traits from other personalities so she isn't just shell.

My thrid gripe is this and I'm not sure most of you agree, but I don't think Eliza, as an actress is up to this task. I didn't see a lot of difference in most of the characters, except the job decribtion and what she's wearing. As a singer, she sings, as a negoitator, I just didn't buy it and mostly she just looks hot, but with a few nuances she is always the same. To me, different characters, different people are not unique because of the skill but because of their language, of the way they talk and walk and hold themselves and well, I'm not sure if it's bad acting or bad writing but I just don't see it.

Yes. To all of this. I've ranted a fair bit in my own journal about all of these issues, but I'm enjoying the show enough to keep watching. I just hope it improves.

Do you think it's odd that you're enjoying it?

Not really. It's presented in a titillating way and I'm only human. So while I find it offensive and annoying and quite stupid, I'm never bored. :D (Actually I found the pilot horribly boring but eps 2 and 3 have entertained me.)
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on March 2nd, 2009 03:40 pm (UTC)
Yes, yes, because I really am never bored. Excpet for last ep..I fast forwarded a bit. But I do that far often than most people.

I'm somewhat confused as well. It doesn't seem to add up but hopefully it will at one point.

What I miss though is the great dialog Joss normally have on his shows.

I hope the reason it doesn't add up is because there is vital information missing.

The dialog and the humor are still missing, I think. LeT's hope it changes.

I agree with you completely on Eliza not being up to it. Especially when she is required to be something other than Faith-like tough chick. Her attempt at the hostage negotiator was terrible. I don't even believe her much when she's playing blank. Episode 2 was better, but episode 3 wasn't quite as interesting - except for the Tahmoh scenes. Those developments captured my attention much more that what was happening with Echo.

I'm going to keep watching though, because I want to see how it shakes out with Alpha and the dolls remembering things. I've read spoilers, and I know who they've cast as Alpha, and I'm looking forward to that part of the story. I just wish they'd get on with it.

Yes, I think if it wasn't for Tahmoh it would be a sinking ship. I hope Eliza gets some more debth in her scenes especially since she and Joss envisioned for this show to show her acting skills in numerous roles. Yes really.

Adn yeah..I want to know about the mysteries. Do I wanna know who they cast as Alpha? Do I want to spoil myself?

ps: Happy birthday!!!!!!!

I have a theory (based pretty much solely off the last five minutes of episode three) that their blank state isn't quite as blank as we think it is, so if I'm right that should help out paragraph three :P

Also I couldn't agree more with paragraph four

You mean the headshaking? That was was intruiging. Like something of the imprint remained.

I'm sort of glad I'm not the only one. I remember all the Faith love form the Buffy days.

I decided halfway through episode 3 to stop watching because I was bored out of my mind. I could forgive the utter skeeviness for the promise that there would be a point to it, but I cannot get past how much it bores me.

Add to that, I am no Joss fan. While he can tell interesting tales, I think he is an insufferable, pompous ass who's bought into his own cult.

I find the premise intriguing but the result is a mess, imo.

Heee... I actually fast forwarded half the thing as soon as it was clear the singer was stupid and wanted creepy stalker dude to kill her.

I'm no Joss fan either and the only person I know who didn't totally fall in love with that Doctor Horrible thing. He totally has the biggest ego.

And I still hope they do more with it.
[identity profile] acari.livejournal.com on March 2nd, 2009 04:04 pm (UTC)
You are not alone! I still don't understand why people liked Dr. Horrible.

I read somewhere the first six episodes are crap because FOX just wouldn't stop meddling, I think Eliza said it even, but by episode seven they finally get to tell the real Dollhouse story.

I will wait until that episode has aired and I could read reviews from people whose judgement I trust. Until then I won't watch anymore.

I still have to catch up on Sarah Connor Chronicles anyway.

I'm sort of glad I'm not the only one ;)

And I heard that too..which is why I'm going to stick to it- fora bit longer. We will see how it pans out. I'm not sure if I'm a barometer for you though ;)

And I'm not gonna comment on TSCC so i don't spoil you.

Right-o. Dollhouse is certainly not the right premise for this actress. I've not been convinced she becomes these different people.
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on March 2nd, 2009 03:45 pm (UTC)
Yes, I think she's more a variation of herself.
[identity profile] emily-reich.livejournal.com on March 2nd, 2009 03:45 pm (UTC)
My thoughts exactly. Seriously, I couldn't have worded it better. The only thing I would add is that I hate the Topher guy. I really just want him to dienowplz.
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on March 2nd, 2009 03:50 pm (UTC)
Heeee..I'm glad. The Topher guy? Is that the scientist or the security dude?
[identity profile] emily-reich.livejournal.com on March 2nd, 2009 03:56 pm (UTC)
The scientist guy that makes all their personalities and is an annoying jerk-off. (I don't know his last name...)
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on March 2nd, 2009 03:58 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I hate that dude. He's so nonchalant and has no qualms about his machine and what they are doing. It's really sad and when something goes wrong he not at fault ever. Who cares what his name is!

I agree with most of what you have. Though for me, I'm mostly curious about Boyd. I like him a lot and want to know more of his background. He almost seems too nice to be working at a place like Dollhouse, you know?

I really liked the twist that the Russian gangster informant was an Active planted to throw off the FBI though. I wonder who his handler is?
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on March 3rd, 2009 10:58 am (UTC)
Isaid this somewhere in comments. Boyd is the only character I like because he doesn't just take it. But I do wnder what his motivation is.

And I knew he was an active fro hte start because I was spoiled by a stupid publicity picture. :(
