Tutorial: Merlin icon

Please be aware, hat this tutorial uses information I've explained in other tutorials previously, links are available in this post though. If you have ideas on how to make this easier or better, please tell me.

Materials:
This texture from this post.
This image of merlin from bbcs merlin site.
Brushset by [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan here.

First open the Merlin image (File > Open) to crop it. I cropped the Merlin image using the pen tool [ ]. The pen tool is the most flxible and precise cropping tool, but also the hardest to master. You can find several tutorials here, here and here which teach the basics and can explain it better then I could.

Try those before you start cropping the image. In case of the promo pic, I zoom (keyboard shortcut= Z) in on it so I can crop it clearer. Change the image mode to be more flexible (shortcut = F). and then use the pen tool to crop. I made a small video to show hown I did it. If you have questions about some of the steps please ask, but read the three tutorials first.

Tip: Sometimes it can be helpful to press Layer > Metting > Defringe after you cropped an image.

Here is a second vid showing how I created the icon, with some loose explanations following.

Now that you have the cropped image, create a new file: File > New (strg + N) with 100px width and height and press "ok". Open the texture sky1.jpg and resize it a bit. Maybe so it is half the size. It will make transforming it easier.

Drag and drop sky1.jpg into the 100x100px file and transform it (edit > free transform or shortcut strg + t), so it fits into the space. Remember to keep shift pressed to not mess with the aspect ratio. Sharpen the background using the Sharpener in the toolbar (shortcut r, Choose second in the drop down menue). And set the options to stength: 7%. I use that for all my sharpening since it's more accurate and allows more control than using a filter. Move the sharpener over the texture a few time until it looks the way you want it to.

Next, repeat all this with the cropped Merlin image. Drag it into the 100x100px file, transform and sharpen.

Create a new Layout to apply some stripes using a brush (shortcut b) with sharpness 100% and about 9-19px width. Then use Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur to merge those lines a bit.

Create another new layer and use a brush 65 or 100px to apply a brown mass in the upper left corner. Then set the layer transparency to about 70%. Or really to whatever you like.

Duplicate the Texure Layer, set it to blend mode multiply with a transparency of about 60%.

Now we start with the first adjustment layer. You can find a full tutorial here. On top of the bottom Texture layer we create an adjustment layer Hue/Saturation and set the Satruration to -100. this way everything under this layer will appear gray. On top of the second texture laxer we create and adjustment layer "Curves". Lighten up the image a bit with this tool.

Now we add another Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. This time instead of taking out the color, we add it. Satuarion: +40. We had it on top of the Merlin image and under the brownish mass. Remember to play with it and change the order of the layers.

On top of the brown mass we add another Hue/Saturation layer with Saturation -100. That makes it all grey, however we will use a mask to mask part of the layer and have parts of the icon colored. To hide and show masks, use the brush-tool. The colors are to be used like this: White=visible, black= invisible, grey=opacity. See Adjustment layer tutorial for more.

Now we create several adjusment layer to color the icon. We create them all on top. I like starting with color balance. In this case I used it to add a blue tint. My favorite adjustment layer of all however is the Selective coloring. I almost always choose to increase the intesity of the white by choosing the white from the drop down menue and decreasing the black there. I made other adjustments here, to the yellow, the blue.. etc.

I've added three more texture layers in between using a brush by [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan. Twice on top of the layer with the masked area and once under the cropped Merlin. And that's that. We got our icon.

Om occasion I reduce the whole image to one layer to sharpen it again.

[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 2nd, 2009 03:18 pm (UTC)
*g* aome of them a least. And in no way impossible. Will you try it out?
[identity profile] animotus.livejournal.com on January 2nd, 2009 03:33 pm (UTC)

I'll try this out as soon as I can open PS. Couldn't open PS yesterday have it open now and ready to try, who knows I may very well master the pen tool!

[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 3rd, 2009 08:04 pm (UTC)
It took me quite a long time to master the pen tool, really.
[identity profile] memoryfloodsin.livejournal.com on January 3rd, 2009 08:06 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it turns out I had it on the wrong setting for starters!
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2009 06:21 pm (UTC)
Really? What did you do?
[identity profile] memoryfloodsin.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2009 07:58 pm (UTC)
I had it set on, well I don't know what exactly but now I've changed the setting it's easier to move anchor points and everything!
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2009 08:02 pm (UTC)
Really? I have no idea what that could be.
[identity profile] newkidfan.livejournal.com on January 2nd, 2009 03:35 pm (UTC)
PEN TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful tut my dear.
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 3rd, 2009 12:00 am (UTC)
Do you like it? Do you think it's understandable? Did you learn somethign new?
[identity profile] newkidfan.livejournal.com on January 3rd, 2009 05:11 pm (UTC)
Yes I like it, and it's very understandable.
I didn't learn anything I didn't know already, but it's always enlightening to see how others do things. For example, I use the sharpen tool on occasion but not every time like you seem to do: I usually merge everything onto a new layer which I sharpen with a filter and then reduce either a) the strength of the sharpening/filter or b) the opacity of the sharpened layer, allowing the original do show through, balancing the sharpened and original views, sometimes using masks too.
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 3rd, 2009 08:28 pm (UTC)
I thought this might be the case. I don't always use the shapren tool either..it really depends.

You have to do another icon tut as well :D

Oooh, great, thanks!

I've been trying to imitate your icons for the last two years (ummm... those ten icons I had time to make during that time, anyway *G* ).

It's always great to learn new techniques from people you admire. So... thank you so much for going to the trouble!

I will definitely try to crop with the pen tool, which I've never done before. Same with the selective coloring.

I guess I really will shell out the money for a new PS version this year - since my mom insists I *must* get a present for Christmas. ;)
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2009 07:32 pm (UTC)
and does this tut help? And I wish I had the money to get cs4.

This is a fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much.

you're welcome..did you try? Did it work for you?
[identity profile] eamesie.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2009 11:50 am (UTC)
Wonderful tutorial, I loved to see how you do those soft colors and how you layer your icons.
I can't even imagine to use the pen tool for cropping though, it's evil and resists all my attempts to master it.
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2009 08:04 pm (UTC)
Just take you time with it... once you got it it#s really awesome.
[identity profile] eamesie.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2009 08:22 pm (UTC)
Ok, I will try attempt #3, once my tolerance for frustration is a bit higher. In the meantime I'm really grateful for my tablet :)
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 11th, 2009 02:39 pm (UTC)
I know what you mean. It took me quite a while. And it's all just mathmatics.

Then I'm doomed :)

Did you try it out?
[identity profile] rubber-dick.livejournal.com on January 12th, 2009 01:01 am (UTC)

sry for the bad english, workin on it. xD
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on January 12th, 2009 10:34 am (UTC)
The pen tool took me ages as well. Stay with it though and you will be able to crop far better.

:D

Just letting you know that Mel pointed to this page and I came over to check it out. I really like your style and I like that each step makes a subtle difference but when it all adds up, the icon is quite lovely!

What I like about your style is that the picture by itself is simple but when combined with different types of textures and brushes, it becomes really amazing.

Also, I'm grabbing some of your textures. Hmm, I don't know if I know how to make many icons since I have problems with even finding a pic I like to icon but I'd like to try out. :)

Thank you..that means a lot coming from you. If you ever need any help...you can just ask me :)

btw, did you get my christmas card?

This is a really great tutorial. Especially the videos were really helpful for me so I could see what you were talking about and that made it easier to transfer it to GIMP and Paint Shop.

The pen tool seems to be really useful. I will have to look into that some more when I am less tired.

Thank you for creating such a detailed, easy to follow tutorial.

This is pretty cool, I never use the pentool on photoshop, I do all my vector work on freehand, but this is quite helpful, thank you!
