Cropping images using Calculations and Channels
Start

There are several ways to crop parts of images you want to use. Usually it depends on the image you want to use and what you want to do with it later.

If you have any question or don't understand something, please ask!

Using the

Eraser   Eraser
Magic Wand   Magic Wand
Polygon Lasso   Polygon Lasso
  Pen   Pen
       Layer Masks

Each of these methods and advantages and disadvantages and it always helps to blend. Should you have questions about the method explained above, please ask.

Open Window > Channels and choose the Channel with the most Contrast. For this image, I used blue.

channel

Now choose Image> Calculations.

A pop-up will appear that will give you choices. We want to create a mask, so have mask clicked. Choose the mode that has the most contrast between characters and background. I chose Color Burn for this image.

channel

Now, you work on the new Alpha Channel in the Channel window.

The tools you will now use are the Dodge Dodge (it lightens parts) and the Burn Burn (it darkens parts). Be careful with the strength you use for both and with the size of the brush. Check out the options carefully (Range & Exposure).

For instance for finder work... keep both tools at Midtones. For quicker stonger but also less clear results, use Lighter when using Dodge and Debth when using Burn.

For very crude work, you can also use the Paintbrush. Black or white.

channel

Once you got the body in black and the background in white (or the other way around), choose "Load Channel as Selection".

Load Channel Selection

Now choose the layer Palette again and klick on the Base image. The black and white should disappear and only leave the selection.

Layer

Now click "add layer mask".

Mask

Then invert the mask by have the mask clicked and using Image> Adjust > Invert.

invert

i'd been trying with another method (the magic wand) which seemed to always take away parts of the skin... i think this will work out much nicer. :) will definitely give this a go - thanks!

There is merit to the magic wand as well. and the marquee tools. It depends on the image and what you need it for.

You can also use vectors to cut. Which is also sensible :)

Excellent tutorial! I usually go about this a whole other way, but I'll definitely try this one more often.

Btw, I happen to be working on a tutorial right now to make a certain type of icon, and one of the steps is to remove a background. Do you mind if I refer people to your tutorial as an alternative way of doing this?

question...
hi :) first thanks for the tutorial, this is really a cool way to crop images.

so I just tried this and I have a q - when I have to "add layer mask" I can't do it - I know where I have to do it but it doesn't let me, it's not possible (I've done it before and it worked, so I really know where to look) - do you have any idea what I could have done wrong? I just went through exactly your steps. I now have my base selected and it looks like it should, similar to your pics. but on my layers palette nothing is highlighted and I can't click anything. any ideas?
thanks in advance :)

Re: question...
You might have to double click the layer in the palette to unlock it. If you open a JPG, it automatically locks the layer.

Oh, great tutorial!
Interesting way to make a selection, I had never heard of it.

I tried it, but I’m so used to the way I do it usually, that this isn’t easier or faster for the utilisation that I need it so, I will stick to my good old eraser. ;-)
[identity profile] elli.livejournal.com on March 9th, 2007 10:22 am (UTC)
*g*..eraser only? that'S interesting!
Do you use the normal one or also the background eraser?

As luck would have it, I found and saved this one day before I had to do some isolation work for my job. I was excited to try this method and it worked pretty well, though I did end up having to paint out the shadowy bits, where the object was resting on the table and met the shadow. But the combination of Dodge and Burn tools really helped me get a crisp line, without having to paint the mask in and out until I got an approximation. Thanks so much for the clear and awesome tutorial!

*g*

It's not an infallible method. But in some cases it works like a charm.

And you are very welcome!

Oh you don't even know how much I needed this! My mouse has issues and it's so hard to use the lasso tool because of it. This is going to be so much better. Thanks so much for making it!

I did try it and some of the person's face and hair turned a little transparent. Does all of it need to be completely black and the background completely white? It looked like it was but maybe it wasn't. I'll keep experimenting. ;)

It is an amazing method!
But I have only one doubt, sometimes in the dark part there are white spots and the white, dark ones and they are npot included on thew selection; is there any way to work with them and erase them??

Thanks for the tut

You can paint on the mask with normal brushes.... that works very well.

Maybe I'm just totally missing something, but I'm completely stuck on the whole "add layer mask" part. I see what shortcut you're using, but for me, it simply created another alpha layer on my palette.

Am I missing something?

It's such a great tutorial!!! Altough it's in english, I understood every part because of the images and you explained it so well!

And I think, it's the easiest und fastest way to crop an image. I first used eraser tool, then the mask tool, but with this way, it's just that easy and you get this tiny things like hair out of the image!

Thanks a lot for sharing this knowledge!

btw: very nice to use an image of Jensen :D

Well... it doesn't work on every image you'll notice.... but it is easy if usable.
