So last night I was thinking about this show, just having seen the last episode and it reminded me of many conversations with my best friend over the years about identity about who we are and what makes us who we are.
I've always believed that life experiences, upbrining and environment influence who we are much more than biology, that the genetic material is only a small base of who we are.
Our social standing, gender, taste, prejudices, education and experiences terminate who we become. We are influenced and shaped by our parents or guardians opinions and values. Very early on, we learn that certain sports are not for girls and dolls are not for boys. We learn what to do and not to do. How to behave in public. That picking your nose is something other people should not see. What is right and what is wrong. We choose our hobbies because we are steered in a direction. Because we are influenced by our parents, friends and people around us. We suck in their values just as much as we suck in their prejudices. How much is free will?
I've been living my life thinking, I have to be this, I have to be that. That is how it's got to be. I want kids, I want to be happy. To the point that I sometimes don't know what I want or who I am. If my decisions are made because of outside influances so much more than self determination.
And I think the Orphan Black illustrates this rather well.
All these clones who have grown up in totally different places. They are the same. They look the same, are the same biologically. But yet, they are all completely different people. The way they grew up and experienced life made them into completely different people. Fact aside that I think it's genious acting work, it's brilliant to see this unfold.
Only one episode left in this season. It is kind of sad.
I hope this entry makes sense and isn't to messy.
Oh and I found an essay on my flist which says it so much better than I did: http://mswyrr.dreamwidth.org/360567.html Go check it out very interesting read.
